More than 20 people have been arrested after climate activists gathered outside an international mining convention clashed with police as they called for mining to be "shut down".

On Tuesday, protesters from 11 different groups met outside the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 6am, blocking the entrance in an attempt to stop the conference going ahead.
