Andrew Nabbout continued his fine form as he opened the scoring in the 15th minute, reading Ma LeiLei's chip over the defence perfectly as he found himself with only City keeper Dean Bouzanis to beat and converted with ease.

The second period continued in much the same manner as both sides struggled to get good chances on goal, until Nabbout lined up a shot from outside the box, scoring his seventh goal of the season in the 52nd minute after being fed the ball by Andrew Hoole.

The goal scoring hero would give one up however after he was judged to have taken down Ivan Franjic from behind inside the box, gifting Bruno Fornaroli a goal from the penalty spot.

City had their chances to score an equaliser, with Anthony Caceres coming close, but they were unable to convert as the match ended 2-1.

Travel issues might have influenced City's performance, as they were up at 5:00am on match day to catch a flight after wild weather forced a cancellation of their scheduled trip on Thursday.

While controlling possession early, they were slow to react with their below-par defence gifting Newcastle space to attack, with Morten Nordstrand almost opening the scoring had Jason Hoffman only been quicker with an early cross.

LeiLei's timely pass in the 15th minute split City's high-line defending and Nabbout was on-hand to spring the offside trap as he coolly passed Bouzanis placed the ball into net.

He would get his double in the 52nd as he latched onto a pass from Hoole to convert from 25 metres out.

City had their chances with Fornaroli heading a shot high, while Luke Brattan was denied by Jack Duncan.

Fornaroli would find the mark when a penalty was awarded in the 69th minute when Franjic went to ground following contact with Nabbout.

There would be no breakthrough however as Newcastle returned to the top six.

Jets manager Mark Jones praised Newcastle's potency in possession after last week's loss to Western Sydney Wanderers.

"There was a little bit more desperation tonight and we executed a little better," Jones said.

"I'm perhaps disappointed we didn't take a 3-0 lead at one point there, or go 3-1 when they were chasing the game after the penalty."
