A bushfire is no longer threatening a town on the NSW south coast.

The fire was within 100 metres of properties at Callala Bay, near Nowra, on Friday evening but has since been downgraded to a watch and act, the Rural Fire Service says.

Firefighters lost control of the hazard reduction burn hours earlier.
