A P-plater accused of doing almost triple the speed limit on a western Sydney road has allegedly told police he was running late for work.

The 19-year-old man was detected going 176km/h in a 60km/h zone in a cul-de-sac in Pemulwuy about 6am on Saturday, police say.

His Ford Falcon XR6 was pulled over, where the driver allegedly said he was running late for work.

His licence was immediately suspended and he will have to attend Blacktown Local Court at a later date.
