Victorians will be able to use their Android smartphones to pay for their public transport trips from Thursday.

But iPhone users will have to wait for the mobile option as the Victorian Government has not yet reached a deal with Apple.

Public Transport Victoria will turn on a system on Thursday morning to allow Android smartphone users to use their devices instead of a physical myki card when catching a train, tram or bus.

The introduction of the technology, which will use Google Pay, follows a successful test.

Commuters will be able to top their myki accounts within the app.

"Mobile myki will make topping up and touching on quicker, and travelling easier," Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne said on Sunday.
