The federal government has announced a royal commission into the aged care sector which has been plagued with appalling cases of abuse of elderly people.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a royal commission on Sunday after appalling cases of abuse have plagued the sector for years.

The prime minister says Australians must have confidence in the nation's aged-care system when they make the challenging decisions of how their loved ones will be looked after.

" This is just further demonstration of the fact that we're focussed on what matters to Australians. This is one of the toughest decisions any Australian has to make on behalf of loved ones, who put their complete trust in them. I want them to have that confidence. I want us to not fight about this issue. I want us to fix it. We're going to keep investing strongly in aged care, we're going to keep lifting the standards."

But Federal Labor is skeptical of the plan and says it's hypocritical for Prime Minister Scott Morrison to talk of improving the aged care sector when he cut billions of dollars from the sector as treasurer.

Health Minister Greg Hunt has denied the cuts, saying around 1-billion dollars is being added every year to the aged care sector.

Shares in aged care providers have also plummeted following the announcement of a royal commission.
