Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has signed an agreement with the French defence minister for Australia's submarine building project.
Jean-Yves Le Drian and Mr Turnbull met in Adelaide today to complete the formal paperwork.
The 12 new submarines the French company DCNS is designing will be constructed in Adelaide, with work to start in 2022 and the first set to enter service in the early 2030s.
Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne says the $56 billion project is the biggest of its kind in the world and for the French public it is important to know that this is the largest contract that DCNS has ever had outside of France in the world.
