Some reports indicate that as many as 12 people have been injured after a car hit pedestrians at the end of Melbourne's Bourke St mall.

Ambulances and police have blocked off the Elizabeth St end of the CBD mall, amid unconfirmed reports of a shooting and a car chase up the pedestrian section of Bourke St.

Paramedics were tending to a number of injured pedestrians, Ambulance Victoria said.

Victoria Police confirmed that the area had been cordoned off and an operation was underway, however the circumstances surrounding the incident were still unclear.

"There was a car that just sped along the footpath and hit people," a witness told police at the scene.
