SA power problems persist as wild weather continues to lash the state

About 100,000 properties are without power across South Australia as continued wild weather adds to the problems for the state's battered energy infrastructure.

Up to 90,000 of those were still waiting to be reconnected after Wednesday's statewide blackout, with consumers in the the state's north and on the Eyre Peninsula the last to have services restored.

But another 10,000 consumers lost supply on Thursday as destructive winds caused more damage.

Emergency authorities have warned the severe weather will continue to lash the state for at least Thursday with more damaging winds and heavy rain.

Wind gusts of up to 140km/h are possible, especially along the west coast of Eyre Peninsula and up to 100mm of rain could fall across the Adelaide Hills, bringing the risk of flooding.

A flood warning has also been issued for Port Pirie, north of Adelaide, because of a storm surge and high waves.

So far on Thursday the State Emergency Service has responded to more than 300 calls for help on top of responding to about 500 on Wednesday.

The ongoing power supply problems have sparked calls for an independent inquiry with Senator Nick Xenophon urging the Australian Energy Market Commission to carry out a robust independent analysis.

The South Australian Opposition has also called for an immediate investigation.

"The situation that occurred yesterday was totally unacceptable and we need to ensure it does not happen again," Opposition Leader Steven Marshall said.

"The independent inquiry into the unprecedented statewide blackout should investigate, amongst other matters, the lack of baseload power generation in South Australia."
