Public school teachers will rally in Adelaide amid a half-day strike over a pay and conditions dispute with the state government.

Hundreds are likely to gather at the main event outside the education department headquarters in Adelaide on Thursday morning with other protests planned for regional centres.

The Australian Education Union expects a strong turnout but the state government says 692 of SA's 875 schools and preschools will stay open.

It says only 183 schools are expected to close.

The AEU says its action is about securing benefits for schools and students, including reduced class sizes, more support for country schools and more resources for special needs children.

But the government says the union also wants a pay hike as well as more sick leave and more non-contact time with students.

Thursday's strike will be the first by SA teachers in about 10 years and comes after a vote of AEU members overwhelmingly endorsed the action and the call for the government to resume negotiations on a new enterprise agreement.
