Two people have escaped unharmed after the plane they were in crashed at Sydney's Bankstown Airport.

Police have been told the plane - believed to be an ex-military jet - ran into problems as it tried to take off on Friday afternoon.

It's understood the plane slid off the runway and came to rest on a grassed area.

Emergency services were called to the airport at about 3.30pm after reports of an aviation emergency, a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

"The male pilot and the female passenger were uninjured and it's going to be referred to CASA (the Civil Aviation Safety Authority) for further investigations," she said.

Firefighters at the scene were dealing with a fuel spillage, a Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman told AAP.
