The federal government is extending a multimillion-dollar suicide prevention trial.

Health Minister Greg Hunt has revealed the scheme, which is already in place at 12 sites across the country, will receive a budget boost of $13 million to continue.

"The message from the ground is we are seeing progress and what we want to do as a government is make sure that we have the right approach to mental health," he told ABC radio on Monday.

Mr Hunt said the government eventually hopes to make the program permanent and extend it across the country after trialling different methods in different communities.

"It's about tailoring the right response to the particular needs of the community," he said.

Trial sites include Brisbane North, Perth South, Townsville and the Kimberley.
