A Sydney bus driver was allegedly using a mobile phone while behind the wheel when he was involved in a crash in which two men on a scooter were killed.

The scooter rider and his passenger, aged 32 and 44, died instantly after colliding with a bus and car while waiting to make a turn in south suburban Kingsgrove about 8.20pm on Monday.

Photos show the destroyed scooter strewn across the road, while the bus' windscreen was shattered on the right side.

The 49-year-old driver of the bus has been charged with two counts each of dangerous and negligent driving causing death, using a mobile phone and not wearing a seatbelt.

He was refused bail to appear in Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday.

Five people lost their lives over the Australia Day long weekend, two more compared to the same period in 2018.
