Australian authorities have reportedly arrested a Sydney woman wanted in Chile over kidnapping offences alleged to have been committed during the military dictator of Augusto Pinochet.

The ABC is reporting that Adriana Rivas was arrested on Tuesday and listed to appear in a Sydney court.

The nanny and cleaner, who moved to Australia in 1978, was detained in Chile in 2006 while on a visit.

But she returned to Australia while on bail.

In 2014 she told SBS News she was innocent of the charges, but defended the use of torture in Chile at the time as necessary.

“They had to break the people – it has happened all over the world, not only in Chile," she told SBS News.

The ABC has quoted Attorney-General Christian Porter confirmed a woman had been arrested on Tuesday "pursuant to a request from the Republic of Chile for her extradition".
