Landmark transgender reforms that would make mentioning gender optional on Tasmanian birth certificates have been delayed until next year.

A legislative council debate on the bill was on Thursday night deferred until March, with some independent MLCs saying the bill needed further amendments.

The reforms, brought forward by the Labor opposition and Greens but opposed by the state government, last week passed the lower house when Liberal Speaker Sue Hickey crossed the floor with her deciding vote.
