Three teenagers have been charged with lighting a fire during a total fire ban in the NSW Blue Mountains.

The boys allegedly built a fire at the base of a cliff at Blaxland about 4pm on Wednesday when they were challenged by local residents, NSW Police said in a statement.

The teens, all aged 16, then tried to smother the fire but it spread.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to put it out before it reached bushland.

They have all been charged with intentionally lighting a fire and being reckless to its spread and will appear at a children's court on September 6.
