Flights and ferries are resuming in Sydney after thick fog that blanketed the city forced delays, with locals sharing spectacular photos of the misty morning on social media.

Low visibility in Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River halted all ferry services with the last of the eight routes resuming just after 8am on Thursday.

"Although all ferries are now running, some passengers may need to allow additional travel time as their ferry returns to timetable," a Transport for NSW spokesman said on Thursday.

The Manly to Circular Quay service resumed just before 8am but replacement buses were still running to help clear passenger lines at Manly.

Multiple domestic and international flights at Sydney Airport were delayed on Thursday with low visibility procedures in force until just before 8am.

Airservices Australia advises passengers to check with their airlines for any cancellations.
