Time for RBA-style energy authority:Greens

The Greens believe the way the present national electricity system is run is broken and should be overseen by a Reserve Bank-style independent body.

The Greens believe there should be an independent authority like the Reserve Bank to oversee the switch to renewable energy to avoid political squabbling at federal and state levels.

Greens MP Adam Bandt says the system is broken with the federal government attacking the states and "waging a war" on renewables, rather than try to fix it to ensure power bills stay low and the lights stay on.

"We would give the federal and state governments the best part of a year to sort out their differences and if they are unable to do that, it's time for one new body to step in," Mr Bandt told ABC television on Sunday.
