Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has ruled out holding any more debates with his counterpart Bill Shorten during the election campaign.

Following the first online debate at Facebook headquarters in Sydney, Mr Shorten challenged the prime minister to a free-to-air debate where the leaders asked each other questions.

But Mr Turnbull told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday three debates per campaign was usual, committing instead to a raft of other media appearances, including on ABC's 730 program.
