Australia's unemployment rate fell to 5.6 per cent in July from an adjusted June figure of 5.7 per cent, official figures show.

The total number of people with jobs rose by 27,900 in the month, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.

Full-time employment fell by 20,300 jobs, while the number of part-time jobs was up by 48,200.

The participation rate, which refers to the number of people either employed or actively looking for work, was up by 0.1 percentage points at 65.1 per cent.
