Two Victorian police officers have come to the aid of a kangaroo in danger of drowning at a beach in Rosebud.

Police had received numerous calls that a kangaroo was in the water at Safety Beach in Rosebud about 5pm Saturday.

When they arrived the kangaroo had made it back to the sand and was recovering in a blanket provided by a member of the public.

But as police were monitoring the roo, it decided to hop back into the surf.

Police said it tried to swim but got into difficulty in the swell and breaking waves and went under water a couple of times.

At that point, two officers jumped into the water.

They managed to carry the unconscious kangaroo to safety and resuscitate it.

The roo was wrapped in blankets and taken to Rosebud Police Station where it was assessed by a local wildlife centre.

Police say the roo is recovering well despite the amount of salt water he swallowed.
