A Queensland student protest in support of democracy in Hong Kong has turned violent according to footage posted on social media.
The University of Queensland released a statement saying it requested police support for the on-campus protests on Wednesday.
Police reported the protest as non-violent but footage of the demonstration posted on social media appears to show men charging at each other while members of the crowd yelled "free Hong Kong".
The university said police moved those involved in the protest away from the scene.
"One of the roles of universities is to enable open, respectful and lawful free speech, including debate about ideas we may not all support or agree with," the University of Queensland statement reads.
"The University expects staff and students to express their views in a lawful and respectful manner, and in accordance with the policies and values of the University.
"Earlier today, in response to safety concerns resulting from a student-initiated protest on campus, the University requested police support."
