Victorians will spend the first day of winter bracing against chilly winds and rain.

Some showers are expected to fall across parts of the state on Saturday when Melbourne is set to hit a top of 15C with south to southwesterly winds in the morning.

There will be some reprieve on Sunday with a brief patch of "fine weather" in the morning before more rain, the weather bureau forecasts.

"There will be more showers developing form the west during Sunday afternoon and evening," senior meteorologist Rod Dickson said.

Another strong cold front will move in from the west on Sunday bringing a "cold blast" to Victoria on Monday with isolated thunderstorms developing and possible hail.

Skiers heading to slopes will see snow as low as 700m.

The temperature is expected to plummet to a low of 12C in Melbourne on Monday before the temperature slowly creeps up later in the week to 15C on Wednesday.

"It looks like we will see showers around until late in the week when we will see the next high-pressure system move across, and that should clear things up," Mr Dickson said.
