Australians are holding on to around 23 million old mobile phones which could be recycled.
That's the finding from research commissioned by not-for-profit group MobileMuster, which is calling on people to hand them in for recycling.
The group's recycling manager, Spyro Kalos, told SBS News that on World Environment Day people should consider recycling their old mobiles in order to send much need materials back into the supply chain - and away from landfill sites.
Mr Kalos says that while over 75 per cent of Australians are aware of mobile recycling, only around a third - or 30 per cent have actually recycled an old mobile.
