2018 New car sales in Australia

According to the FCAI, 1.53 million cars are sold in 2018, which is 3 per cent less than in 2017.


New car sales result in 2018 are released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). According to the FCAI, 1.53 million cars are sold in 2018, which is 3 per cent less than in 2017. Especially, sales in New South Wales has biggest drop 6.6 per cent, equal as 26,306 cars.

Tony Weber, CEO of FCAI, analyses the result and said, because of the economic depression in Australia, such as housing market reduction and cash flow problem, new car market had a huge impact on their sales results. And then, the year 2019 may be the last year to sale more than 1 million cars in a year in Australia.

During this period, new car sales of Ford Australia fell 11.6% and Holden fell 32.7%, worst sales amounts since the 1960s.

According to the FCAI data, Toyota Hilux takes number 1 in Australia new car market before Ford Ranger. And Korean and Japanese brand small hatchbacks also have a good sales output during this period, like as previous periods.

Medium sports utility vehicles (SUV) is the rising star of 2018, cause of growing demand. And, 43% of new car sales are coming from SUV categories, official data shows.

To promote new car sales, most of the brands are offered extended warranties to the customer. In 2018, starting from Ford, Holden, Mazda and Volkswagen offers a 5-year warranty, rather than the 3-year. And now, the market leader, Toyota also started extended warranty for their customers.
