It’s the sixth day of Alex Reuben McEwan’s trial for the murder of Eunji Ban near Brisbane's CBD in November.
The Brisbane man confessed to killing the Korean woman but pleaded not guilty on the grounds of his mental illness deprived him of the ability to control his actions.
McEwan claims he was possessed by a demon named Jazzy when he attacked Ms Ban, and his body was out of control.
"I was trying to stop myself. I was trying to call out help. I was trying to think of anything I could to stop my actions," McEwan said.
However, Crown prosecutor David Meredith suggested McEwan exaggerated his psychosis to avoid responsibility for Ms Ban's death and to spare his mother the distress of knowing her son is a murderer.
Psychiatrist Olav Nielssen told the court the accused's treatment-resistant schizophrenia would have caused his actions and not the "evil intentions" Mr Meredith described.
"The only two explanations here are he's just a grossly sadistic psychopath or he's affected by symptoms of a psychotic illness," Dr Nielssen said.
"Five psychiatrists know he's got a psychotic illness."
The trial continues.
