In March 2013, the federal government passed forced-labour laws that, so far, remain largely untested.


In recent years, the Fair Work Ombudsman has been trying to help migrant workers recoup millions of dollars in unpaid wages.

Giri Savaraman is a lawyer who has dealt with cases of forced labour.

 

He says many are not pursued because the legal costs usually eclipse the amount the workers are owed.

 

In March 2013, the government passed anti-slavery, forced-labour and human-trafficking laws to target employers taking advantage of foreign workers.

 

Specialists in the field say, while cases have since been heard in court, there have been no prosecutions.
