NSW has recorded 11 new cases of coronavirus, taking the number of cases across the state to 2897.

NSW has recorded 11 new cases of coronavirus, taking the number of cases across the state to 2897.

No new deaths have been recorded in past 24 hours, with the death toll remaining at 26.

Of the 207 people being treated for COVID-19, 26 are in intensive care and 19 on ventilators.

About 5 more residents tested positive at a Western Sydney aged care home where a sick employee continued work.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says the numbers are a positive sign.

She said "Thank you to the people who have come forward to get tested. With more people tested but the number of cases stabler and going down, is a positive sign. But it also means we have work to do in clamping down on that community-to-community transmission, which is what our health experts are keeping a close watch on."

Meanwhile, special commission of inquiry will investigate the Ruby Princess cruise ship debacle.

Expecting to report back to the government in three to four months, eminent barrister Bret Walker will lead the inquiry.

The Ruby Princess, docking in Sydney last month [[march 19]], is now linked to 19 coronavirus deaths and hundreds of cases across Australia.

Some 2700 passengers were permitted to disembark without adequate health checks, which federal border authorities blame on NSW Health.

In Australia, 63 people have died from COVID-19 and over 6400 have been infected.
