Australians are expected to churn through 1.1 million gigabytes of mobile data on Christmas Day, double what was used last year.

Australians probably won't get a photo of Santa and his reindeer on Christmas Day, but they're expected to take plenty of themselves.

Telstra estimates 1.1 million gigabytes of mobile data will be used on its network on Christmas Day, twice what was used last year.

That's the equivalent of about 275 million song downloads - 11 songs for every person across the country.

About 36 per cent of Australians expect to take a selfie to share with friends and family on the special day.

"What was once a phone call to wish a loved one Merry Christmas now also includes capturing digital mementos of the day to share with friends and family," Telstra's director of wireless network engineering, Channa Seneviratne, said.

About 34 per cent of 18-24 year olds will use Snapchat, while four in ten will chat with friends and family via video.

"The prominence of instant video capture applications like Snapchat and Instagram are changing the way we communicate and share, making it possible to feel like you are in two or three places at once and more intimately involved than ever before," Mr Seneviratne said.

Mobile calls are expected to increase to 38 million on Christmas Day, up 8.5 per cent on last year, and a record 59 million messages are expected to be sent.

New Zealand, the UK and the US remain the most popular international call destinations, according to Telstra.
