Tamil parents Priya and Nadesalingam and their two Australian-born daughters figint to stay in Australia have become a focus for long-argued debates about Australia's approach to asylum seekers, opening up fresh divisions along some unlikely lines.


Thousands of Australians including the Labor frontbenchers and human rights activists have been calling on the federal government to show compassion by halting the deportation of a Tamil asylum seeking family.

But the government's decisions about this case should not only be framed in terms of charity or benevolence.
