A 21-year-old Korean woman has allegedly been raped in the Cairns when she was walking down Aplin Street about 1:00am on 15 July. A man allegedly grabbed her, dragged her into nearby bushes and sexually assaulted her.
Around 2am that morning, he is accused of knocking a 28-year-old Japanese woman off her bike, on the same street, near a local shopping centre. when the same man grabbed her, pushing her off her bike and onto the ground. The man punched her about the head and face but fled on foot when a 29-year-old man walking nearby heard the womans screams and went to her aid.
Extensive patrols by police located the man hiding in mud near the Esplanade boardwalk.
An 18-year-old Cairns man has been charged with five counts of common assault, four counts of rape, and one count each of attempted rape, deprivation of liberty, torture, sexual assault, assault with intent to commit rape, and robbery using personal violence.
Both women were transported to hospital for treatment to non-life threatening injuries received during the assaults.
