A senior Federal Opposition figure has challenged South Australia's Labor Premier to call a state election over his support for a GST increase.
Labor's Jay Weatherill has said he would be prepared to accept a higher GST as a trade-off for more health and education funding.
That has now prompted Labor's deputy Senate leader, Stephen Conroy, to dare Mr Weatherill to take that idea to the people, predicting he will lose an election if he does.
It is the latest development in the ongoing stoush between Federal Labor and Mr Weatherill, who is also stopping short of endorsing the funding plan for Bill Shorten's schools agenda.
Mr Shorten has promised $37 billion for schools over 10 years and detailed the mechanism for paying for the boost.
But Mr Weatherill is not endorsing the idea yet, despite a phone call from Mr Shorten telling him it is fully funded.
