Australia's renowned curator Doug Hall emphasises the significance of hosting an exhibition to showcase North Korean paintings which are not part of the regime's propaganda.

An unprecedented exhibition by North Korean artist Kim Guang-Nan made its Australian debut at Anna Schwartz Gallery in Melbourne on April 20.

The exhibition titled The Future is Bright, curated by Doug Hall AM runs until May 21.

Art historian Doug Hall who set up the Asia Pacific Triennial while he was the director of the Queensland Art Gallery worked for nearly a decade trying to get art from North Korea into the APT which focuses on the contemporary art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia.

A collection of rare and unique artworks by Kim Guang-nan is inspired by the Soviet-style propaganda comics of Kims childhood.

DOUG HALL AM, an associate professor at the University of Melbourne, is a writer, critic and curator.
