Saturday will be the first electoral test since Australia's federal election last year. In the town of Cobargo, which was devastated by bushfires, residents are encouraging the prime minister to pay them another visit.

The final day of campaigning in the Eden-Monaro by-election is expected to further focus on bushfire-affected towns in the area.

Federal opposition leader Anthony Albanese is expected to accompany the Labor party's candidate for the electorate, Kristy McBain, on a driving tour across the seat today [[fri]].

Labor is looking to retain the southern New South Wales seat.

Former Labor M-P Mike Kelly's retirement caused this by-election.

Opinion polls show Labor in front.

The counting of votes is expected to take longer than usual due to coronavirus safety measures at polling places and the vote counting centre, although the Australian Electoral Commission has promised to do its best to get an indicative result on election night [[sat 4 jul]].
