Dateline goes on polar patrol in a Canadian town where bears roam the streets and everything in daily life has its own unique challenge.
Leo Ikhakik has the unique job of keeping the town of Arviat safe from polar bears.
Hes been the local polar bear monitor for five years and sees them around town on most days during autumn.
Hes armed with rubber bullets, which will scare the animals off, but also live ammunition just in case.
Canada does allow Inuit communities to continue their traditional hunting of polar bears, but theres a strict quota. In Arviat's case it's just eight kills per year.
Its very scary to stay out during the polar bear season, says Leos daughter Lorraine, whos mum to six children. I try not to take my kids anywhere thats not safe.
Some blame climate change for making it harder for the bears to find their traditional food like seals, so theyre increasingly venturing into town.
The slower formation of sea ice also makes it harder for them to move on with their normal migration.
Its a good and scary job, but I really like my job… as long as they want me, Ill do it, polar bear monitor Leo says.
