The Betrayal of Kenya’s Athletes Source: SBS

In Kenya, success on the track can mean the difference between being rich or poor and the stakes are high. But it is more diffecult to get a peace of bread for a day living than hard training in Kenya.

So high, that some will take the risk to their health and reputation of using performance-enhancing drugs. The sports governing body, Athletics Kenya, has been put on probation by the World Anti-Doping Agency for not complying with the rules.

The anonymous athlete admits he is taking EPO a drug that builds up red blood production, helping athletes absorb more oxygen and run faster for longer.

Doctors try to time the dosage so athletes benefit in training, but its out of their system before they race. Theres almost no random testing of athletes in Kenya during training.
