According to the Centre for Independent Studies, Australia's seven major universities are hugely dependent on foreign students for their financial survival.
The report shows that the financial risk of the universities ran into the hundreds of millions of dollars annually, with Chinese student course fees accounting for between 13 and 23 per cent of their total revenues.
The author of the report, Salvatore Babones, asserts that Australian universities need to mitigate the risk of a sudden revenue collapse by raising international students’ admissions criteria and reducing their enrolments.
