The green ballot paper is to elect a local candidate for the House of Representatives. While, the white ballot paper is for electing a senator from their own state or territory.


Australians go to the polls to vote in the Federal Election on May 18. Here is a guide on voting in the House of Representatives.

Voters will be given two ballot papers.

The green ballot paper is to elect a local candidate for the House of Representatives. While, the white ballot paper is for electing a senator from their own state or territory.

Each Member of the House of Representatives is elected to represent an area known as an electoral division. Each electoral division within a state or territory contains about the same number of people on the electoral roll.

The electors in each division elect one person to represent them in the House of Representatives.
