8 veterans visit the battlefields Kapyong and Maryang San to mark the 65th anniversary of the brutal campaign.

More than 17,000 Australians served in the Korean War and the post-armistice period, with 356 killed and more than 1200 wounded.

At the battle of Kapyong, the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade, including the 3RAR, helped stop the Chinese advance on Seoul in April, 1951. But their stand came at a cost and 32 Australians were killed, 59 wounded and three taken prisoner. Another 20 Australians were killed and 89 wounded at the battle of Maryang San in October, 1951.

Two old Diggers from West Australia, who both served in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, will take part in a mission of eight veterans to visit the battlefields Kapyong and Maryang San to mark the 65th anniversary.

John Murphy, 87, was only 21 when he was wounded by a grenade explosion in the battle of Kapyong.

Mr Murphy said the trip would be a poignant experience.

When youre representing quite a lot of Diggers that were over there, and some that never came back, it has to be a bit emotional, he said.
