Foreign student number rose while working holiday visa holders declined

The number of foreign students rose by 7% but the number of working holiday visa holders declined by 4.5% on the previous year, as of July.


Herald Sun reported that the number of foreigners in Australia on short-term visas increased sharply and Chinese and Indian nationals were leading a spike.

According to an ImmDepartment report, there were 1.06 million foreigners in total here on temporary visas as of July, up 5.1% on the previous year. The total number of Chinese on temporary visas was 186,220, Indians (157,540), UK citizens 88,050), South Koreans (50,700), Filipinos (41,410), Americans (39,380) and Malaysians (39,170).

The number of foreign students rose by 7% to reach 401,420. China had the most students with almost 53,000, followed by India (41,920), then Vietnam (20,650), Nepal (18,780) and South Korea (17,770).

There was also a 4.5 % fall in the number of working holiday visa holders to 137,380
