Lisa Wilkinson's resignation reignites a fierce debate about a gender pay gap.

The Australian media industry has been rocked by the news that tv presenter Lisa Wilkinson has quit her high-profile job as co-host of the Nine Network's Today show.

She'll take up a new role with the Ten Network next year.

Her resignation comes amid reports the network refused to pay her the same salary as her male co-host.

She was reportedly paid around half of Mr Stefanovic's $2 million a year salary. When she demanded equal money, Nine reportedly only offered $1.8 million dollars per year, so she quit.

Gender equality advocates say Ms Wilkinson's decision encourages other women to take a stand against what they see as gender pay inequality.
