The working conditions of delivery riders are being tested in a series of court cases that could have a significant impact on what's known as the 'gig economy'.

One former rider is fighting for his rights in the Fair Work Commission, while others are heading to the Federal Court.

Victorian Industrial Relations Minister Natalie Hutchins says the aim is to give gig-workers - short-term, contract or freelance workers - some security and safety.
