Patients with chronic illnesses could soon find it much easier to access medicinal cannabis, under changes announced by the federal government.

Patients will soon be able to access medicinal marijuana within days of receiving a prescription from their doctor.

Health Minister Greg Hunt announced Australian companies will be able to import regular shipments of the medication, possibly within the next two months.

He says the imports will be enough to keep up with demand while local marijuana growers gear up to produce the drug domestically.
