Australians often believe they are quite progressive in their views about traditional gender roles at home and work, but new research shows the reality is vastly different.
The latest Household Income and Labour Dynamics report shows despite progressive attitudes towards gender roles, women are still doing the lion's share of the housework.
Women are doing on average seven more hours than men a week, and that increases once they have children, with mums taking on 65 per cent of the housework and 63 per cent of child care.
The Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey has been tracking the same group of Australians since 2001.
