According to the Department of Health Australia, smoking tobacco is recognised as one of the largest preventable causes of death and disease in Australia. Each year, smoking kills an estimated 15,000 Australians and costs Australia $31.5 billion in social (including health) and economic costs.
Why Should I Quit?
There are so many reasons. When you quit, you’ll feel better and cut your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or cancer. It’s worth it, even if you have smoked for a long time.
The people you live with, especially children, will be healthier if you quit smoking. If you’re pregnant, you will improve your chances of having a healthy baby. And you will have extra money to spend on things other than cigarettes.
Studies show that smoking can make you look older. Smokers of more than 20 cigarettes a day are three times more likely to wrinkle prematurely than non- smokers, an effect that's both unavoidable and irreversible naturally, and more pronounced in women.For those who are concerned about looking older, quitting smoking should be at the top of the 'to do' list.
