The Gold Coast Bulletin reported that a Korean man living in Southport bailed over the alleged torture, assault and extortion of his flatmate.

Sangmin Jeong, 25, was granted bail in the Southport Magistrates Court on 23rd Jan over the charge of torture, assault occasioning bodily harm, common assault and the extortion of $11,000.

It is reported that the man worked fulltime as a cleaner has been living with his partner in Southport since last year. He attended the Southport Police Station connected with a drink driving charge last week and a few other offences were added.

Defence lawyer Ashkan Tai told the court the allegations in regards to torture were weak and police had been unable to provide enough evidence about the individual allegations.

It was heard in the court that the extortion allegation is alleged repayments of Jeongs car crashed by the flatmates car.

His bail was granted by magistrates Chris Callaghan but, later the mans lawyer was advised the man would not be released from custody but instead transported to a detention centre.
