New data shows that nearly half of people who have taken up the federal government's First Home Loan Deposit Scheme intend to buy their first home outside of the country's three largest cities.

The data also shows most of these people buying outside of Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are under thirty years of age.

Those aged between 30 and 39, on the hand, are more like to be buying in the bigger cities.

The scheme offers ten thousand places, and allows for first-time buyers to save for a deposit of just five percent on their home loan.

A further ten thousand places in the scheme will become available in July.

Federal Housing Minister Michael Sukkar has told Sky News the fact people are using the scheme to buy homes outside of the major capital cities is pleasing.
