Learn about the types of crimes Koreans are frequently exposed to, how to handle the situation and Crime Victim’s Compensation laws.

The recent crime case of Hyunseok Ryu has raised huge concerns about crime. SBS Korean interviewed Tenny Kim, the CEO of Littles Lawyers and legal advisor of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, to learn more about the types of crimes Koreans are frequently exposed to, how to handle the situation and Crime Victim’s Compensation laws.

Mr. Kim explains younger people with working holiday visa are more vulnerable to severe crimes due to their lack of language skills and understandings of the culture. Sexual assaults, drugs and murder are few of the crimes. If one became a victim of crime, Mr. Kim urged to contact police in no time. Korean government has 24-hour help line to assist with the victims. Also, in case of sexual assault, it is vital to visit the hospital in order to obtain the evidence and to prevent further issues.

Mr. Ryu may be eligible for little compensation from the Queensland government as per Victim Assist, according to Mr. Kim. This fund exists to support the unfortunate victims like Mr. Ryu, who cannot receive any compensation from the attackers as they have no capability to pay. However, it will not be enough considering the permanent damage the crime has caused. Mr. Kim urges the listeners to avoid any suspicious situations as preventing from becoming the victim of crime is the most imperative.
