The following information about handling defects in off the plan apartment is brought to you by Ji Hoon Chang, a lawyer from David Chang Legal.

News that a newly built apartment in Sydney was at risk of collapse shocked many apartment residents in Australia during this Christmas holiday.

Complaints of a ‘cracking sound' prompted an evacuation of 3,000 people in the surrounding area on Christmas Eve.

This news was a bit extreme but, it is pretty common for you to find defects especially when you purchase an off the plan apartment.

In Australia, the strata building bond and inspections scheme began on 1 January 2018 which forces developers to arrange for and lodge a building bond with NSW Fair Trading equal to 2 per cent of the contract price for the building work.

This scheme can be of help to solve the defect issues in newly built off the plan apartments.
Ji Hoon Chang, a lawyer from David Chang Legal, gives you brief legal advice about the issue through the January episode of the Legal Info.
