SBS Korean program has looked at Korean community around Australia how they embrace a legalisation of same-sex marriage since the day the first same-sex married couple was registered on January 9 2018.
After two series of interviews with Korean gay men, Sangwoo Lee and Davide Lee and Korean transgender man Taylor Song, it seems obvious that the Korean community in Australia has a conservative view on the same-sex issue.
Today, a long-time supporter of LGBTQ rights in the community, Reverend Young-Dae Lee analyses the issue.
Rev Lee is a pastor of Korean background and the leader of a congregation at a Uniting Church in Dundas and Ermington and has shown his support to the same-sex marriage in public for quite a while.
A rare figure in the Korean community, Rev Lee tells SBS Korean Program that generally the Korean community has ignored the LGBTQ issues.
“The Korean community in Australia mainly has been ignorant the issue," he says. "The society back in Korea hasn’t really looked into the issue with minorities."
"As we live in Australia, we should learn about how to look after and love the marginalised people [who may be] suffering.”
"There were wrong, prejudiced and misunderstood about marginalised people and I believe this may have affected the Korean community in Australia.
"However, as we live in Australia, we should learn about how to look after and love the marginalised people [who may be] suffering.”
